Brad Hales opened Peoples in the basement of the Forest Arms apartments in the Cass Corridor in 2003, on the strength of a 45 collection he had assembled across Detroit. In 2008 a fire gutted the flat above and flooded the shop; he salvaged what boxes of 45s he could and started again. It is used vinyl only, roughly a hundred thousand 45s in the room, weighted to soul but strong on jazz, R&B, gospel and rock, and the rarities are good enough that collectors fly in from Japan and Germany for them. The Gratiot Avenue shop sits inside the Trinosophes arts space and doubles as the Michigan Audio Heritage Society museum
