Piccadilly Records opened in 1978, the same year Factory Records started, and spent the post-punk eighties selling a mix of rock, pop, indie and alternative to a city in the middle of its most creative run. The current management took over in 1990 and moved the shop to Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter in 1997, where it still is. It has since been voted best independent record store at the Music Week awards and best record store at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards, and its staff end-of-year lists are read well beyond Manchester.
