John Damroth was twenty-seven and had just left advertising when he opened Planet Records in a converted parlour-floor apartment in Kenmore Square in November 1983, having remodelled the room with his brother. He paid the loan back inside a year. In 1998 fire destroyed the Kenmore Square shop; the only reason there was still a business afterwards is that he had opened a small annex in Harvard Square six months earlier. That annex is the shop now, on Mount Auburn Street, selling records, CDs, DVDs and music books across every genre and buying collections in. Damroth's standard for the place is a question he asks himself: "Would my parents be proud of me if they walked into the store?"
