Premier was opened in Smithfield in 1926 by a couple - one from Fivemiletown, one from Belfast - who shared a love of Irish traditional music, and it has been in the same family ever since, which makes it the oldest shop of its kind in Ireland and one of the oldest record shops anywhere in the world. Their children Billy, Malachy, Gerry and Winnie grew up in it and went on to found Outlet Records, a studio and label that recorded Stiff Little Fingers, the Dubliners and Philomena Begley. Billy McBurney died in 2016 and Outlet is no longer running; the shop is. Irish traditional and country music of every description, on record, CD and DVD, plus Irish comedy. Through the worst of the Troubles the McBurneys sold to everybody equally, which in Belfast in those years was a position, not a business decision
