Barry Weisfeld spent five years from 1975 selling used records out of a van at flea markets and college campuses before settling in one place. He picked Princeton because it sat halfway between New York and Philadelphia, had a student population, and was walkable during the 1979 oil crisis. The shop opened on Nassau Street in 1980 with 15,000 records and moved to its larger Tulane Street home in 1985. It now runs to over 4,500 square feet and more than 100,000 titles, which makes it one of the largest independents in the United States. Jon Lambert, long the general manager, bought it in 2015.
