Probe was opened in 1971 on Clarence Street by Geoff and Annie Davies with their friend Dave Keats, and moved in 1976 to Button Street, around the corner from Eric's Club on Mathew Street. That put it at the dead centre of Liverpool punk and post-punk. Pete Burns of Dead or Alive worked behind the counter, and Pete Wylie, Julian Cope and Paul Rutherford were all through the door - Cope wrote about shopping there in Head On. Geoff Davies started the Probe Plus label above the shop in 1981. Since August 2010 it has been inside the Bluecoat on School Lane, the oldest surviving building in the city centre; because it is Grade I listed there is no signage outside, so you look for the doorway to the right of the gates
