Ken Sarachan started Rasputin Records in Berkeley in 1971, naming it after Grigori Rasputin. It began on Durant Avenue and settled at the corner of Telegraph and Channing, moving across the street into the larger 2401 Telegraph space when Odyssey Records went under. It is now the largest independent chain of record shops in the Bay Area, and the stock goes well past records - new and used CDs, LPs, DVDs, video games, VHS, Laserdiscs, CED videodiscs and books, with a reputation for rarities.
