Real Groovy is the shop New Zealand names first. Chris Hart and Chris Priestley built it out of a second-hand vinyl business on Mt Eden Road and moved it to Queen Street in 1991, where it spent three decades and became something closer to a public building than a shop - a meeting place for musicians, DJs and collectors across several generations, and a room big enough that the only fair comparison anyone reaches for is Amoeba. It very nearly went under in the 2008 crash, and what saved it was vinyl: the record floor grew as everything else shrank. In 2023 it left Queen Street for 19 Victoria Street West, up above an inner-city supermarket, still warehouse-scale and still stacking records, films, books and a great deal of other strangeness.
