Record Surplus has traded since 1985, calling itself The Last Record Store, and spent 26 years on Pico Boulevard before moving to Santa Monica Boulevard in 2011. Scale is the appeal: north of 100,000 items on the floor and a warehouse behind it running into the hundreds of thousands, covering ground most shops will not touch - easy listening, spoken word, big band, Dixieland and opera sit alongside the soul, jazz, hip-hop and rock. New and used, and priced to be dug through rather than admired.
