Brothers Gary and Wayne Johnson started Rockaway in 1979 after a record swap meet in the Capitol Records car park, running an international mail order business out of the basement of the house they shared. They bought a small shop called Rainbow Records on Glendale Boulevard in 1982, outgrew it twice, and settled into the current Silver Lake premises in 1992. The name is a nod to the Ramones. It has become as much a collectibles house as a record shop: rare pressings, autographs, posters and memorabilia, forty-odd years deep.
