Geoff Travis opened the first Rough Trade at 202 Kensington Park Road in Ladbroke Grove in 1976, naming it after the Canadian band. The shop and the label separated in 1982 when money got tight: Travis kept the label, three shop staff bought the stock for seven thousand pounds and took the shop round the corner to 130 Talbot Road. It has been there ever since, which makes Rough Trade West the oldest surviving shop in the group and the room where the whole thing started
