Ruff Trade started as Rip Off in 1979, soon became part of the Rough Trade Distribution and was renamed into Rough Trade in the early 80s. Music journalist Michael Ruff joined them in 1984. In 1989 Rough Trade had financial problems and sold the store to Michael - and since his last name is Ruff, he renamed Rough Trade into Ruff Trade.
