Sick City started in Silver Lake in 2006 as a barbershop with a couple of crates of records in it, and in 2008 the records took over enough to justify the Echo Park shop it has occupied since. It is still both - Jesse Lopez cuts hair in the same room he sells records in - and it is Latino-owned and unusually committed to local Los Angeles bands, alongside rock, punk and whatever else has come through the door. The rent went from $1,800 a month in 2020 to $3,500, and by the end of 2025 the shop was openly fundraising to stay open
