Bobby Polsky opened Smash in 1984 in a small Georgetown storefront near Key Bridge, betting a shop on punk and new wave in the middle of the biggest decade stadium rock ever had. It worked. Polsky handed it over around 2005 to Matthew Moffatt, who still has it, and the shop has been on 18th Street in Adams Morgan since 2007. Punk, hardcore, rock and indie on vinyl, CD and cassette, plus clothing and band merchandise, and four decades of being the room the DC scene passes through. Moffatt on lasting this long: "We didn't know vinyl was going to come back, but fortunately it did"
