Neal Becton spent ten years as an editorial aide at the Washington Post before leaving in 2003 to co-run Crooked Beat Records in Adams Morgan, and left that after three years to open his own shop. Som has been in a basement on 14th Street NW since 2006, named after the Portuguese for sound, and covers a genuinely DC range - go-go and hardcore both, which is not a combination many cities could offer - across around ten thousand records taking in soul, reggae, disco, blues, salsa and international records alongside the new releases worth having. There is a turntable to check a record on before you buy, prices run from forty-five-cent singles up, and there is a dollar bin for the people who would rather take the chance
