Jason Hughes and Nabil Ayers opened Sonic Boom on 26 September 1997 in an 800 square foot converted house in Fremont, having scraped together enough for the lease. Ballard and Capitol Hill followed in 2001; Fremont closed in 2008 and Capitol Hill in 2011, leaving the Ballard shop on Market Street as the whole business. A Death Cab for Cutie in-store is what put it on the Northwest indie rock map, and Rolling Stone listed it among the best record shops in the country in 2010. Hughes and Ayers sold to Mike Pitts in 2016.
