Matt Davies, a former punk, opened Tangled Parrot in Carmarthen in 2000 and it has since spread to Swansea and Hay-on-Wye. The Guardian has put it in Britain's top ten record shops. What distinguishes it is not the stock list - mainstream through to the extreme end, plus rare second-hand - but that it backs local artists and Welsh-language acts as a matter of policy, in a country where those records have to be sold by someone who cares whether they sell. The Swansea shop has a cafe in it.
