The Business has been culturing Anacortes since 1978, when local legend Glen DesJardins founded it as a retail experiment selling everything from stained glass and books to bird seed and camera gear. Its past employees include Karl Blau and Phil Elverum. Bret Lunsford of Beat Happening and D+ owned it from 1995 to 2004 and launched the Knw-Yr-Own label out of it; Liz and Jensen Lovelett ran it from 2005 to 2010 and moved it into the historic downtown; Nick Rennis and Evie Opp have owned it since 2010, moving it to the Olson Building in 2016 and the Wilson Hotel in 2023. In 2012 they started The Business Distro, which took the shop's reach global.
