Kunle Tejuoso opened the Jazzhole in 1991 as an offshoot of Glendora, the bookshop chain his mother Gbemisola started in 1975, and moved it to Awolowo Road in Ikoyi in 1995. It is a record shop, a bookshop and a cafe at once, and the ambition behind it was never retail: Tejuoso set out to bring international music into Lagos while archiving African music and writing before it disappeared. What is in there now is arguably the best collection of African records, books and artefacts anywhere on the continent, and the shop has long since become somewhere people go to sit as much as to buy.
