Tondo Music sits across the street from the post office in Maroggia, in an old stone building on the banks of Lake Lugano whose shopfront reminded its owner of Dobell's Record Shop in London, where he bought his first 45. Tondo studied flute at the Conservatorio G. Nicolini in Piacenza, moved to the United States at 17 with a suitcase and a handful of favourite records, and over the following 30 years built a collection of more than 45,000 pressings before retiring here. The village has 529 living souls, which he counted as a plus rather than a problem. He is behind the counter himself: he will spin your album, and if you stay long enough, pour you a drink.
