Tutl was started in 1977 by the composer Kristian Blak, as a joint effort between the Tórshavn jazz club and the folk group Spælimenninik í Hoydølum, and it is now the label, the distributor and the shop for Faroese music more or less single-handed - over five hundred releases from a country of fifty thousand people. The shop in downtown Tórshavn carries the lot: Faroese folk, gospel, neo-pagan and the particular Nordic strain of metal, alongside international records. It also puts on concerts through the summer in sea caves you reach by boat, in Nordic houses and in churches. The word tutl is Faroese for a whisper.
