Utopia opened in December 1978 after its founder went round every record shop in Sydney asking for a job, got knocked back by all of them, and started importing albums himself instead. It became Australia's metal shop - through the eighties it carried the NWOBHM, the American glam invasion and the thrash movement as they broke, and it is still the country's largest heavy metal and hard rock specialist, over twenty thousand items on the lower ground floor off Bathurst Street. Family owned the whole way
