Vinyl Exchange opened on Oldham Street in 1988 and grew into the biggest buyer and seller of vinyl, CDs and DVDs in the northwest - a two-floor second-hand operation where the ground level is new arrivals and the basement is where the afternoon goes. Because it buys as hard as it sells, the stock turns over constantly and collectors' editions surface with no warning. Tim Burgess, Johnny Marr and Bez are among the regulars, which in the Northern Quarter counts as ordinary rather than notable.
