Tony Boothroyd started Vinyl Tap in 1985 with a stall on Huddersfield open market, meaning it as pocket money. Customers arrived to sell as well as buy, the business took on shops in Halifax and Leeds and became a limited company in 1992, then from 1999 concentrated on mail order and built a worldwide name through its website and the record fair circuit. It returned to a Huddersfield shopfront in 2011, taking over from Wall of Sound on John William Street, and is now the last independent high street record shop in the town. Two floors hold more than 150,000 records, CDs, cassettes and memorabilia, strongest in promos, deletions, imports and limited pressings
