Von's began in September 1968 as a book store in the dining room of John and Sylvia von Erdmannsdorff's apartment while they were at Purdue for graduate school, with no opening hours for the first month and orders delivered via mailboxes. By that October it was open to customers and the stock had spread into the living room, taking in records, art cards and posters. It moved upstairs in a duplex, then to the State Street building it still occupies, and has grown into the area's oldest and most respected book shop, with departments covering books, fashion, gifts and novelties, rocks and records. The vinyl racks are still there to dig through alongside the vast used book collection.
