VP traces back to Randy's Records and Randy's Studio 17 on North Parade in Kingston, run by Vincent and Patricia Chin, where Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear and Augustus Pablo all worked. The Chins moved to New York in the mid-1970s, opened a shop in Brooklyn in 1975 and relocated to Jamaica, Queens in 1979. The name is the founders' initials. The label followed in 1993 off the back of the shop and became the largest reggae and Caribbean music label and distributor in the world - the retail counter came first.
