Waaghals is a specialist vinyl and CD shop on Walstraat that behaves more like a small institution than a retailer. Noisy indie pop is the backbone of the racks, and the shop takes its programme out of the building: in July it runs .wav, a stage and pop-up shop inside the thousand-year-old St Nicolaaskapel at the Valkhof Festival, with an in-store bill aimed at adventurous listeners. It also presses records as Waaghals Records, including the Rataplan Tapes box drawn from the Arnhem pirate station Radio Rataplan, which began in 1980 and broadcast for the last time on 11 May 2001.
