Mark Sullo and Eric Hoffman started Wall of Sound in May 1990 as a literal wall of records inside the Art in Form bookstore in Belltown, which is where the name came from - not Phil Spector, as everyone assumes, but the size of the space they had. It was sold in 2002, moved to Capitol Hill in 2003 and to East Pike a decade later, and spent thirty-odd years as the shop for the difficult end of the racks: avant-garde, Japanese noise, industrial, free jazz, electro-acoustic, ambient, neo-classical and world music, new and used, on record, CD and tape. In June 2026 it announced it is closing after twenty-three years on the Hill - check before travelling
