Dan Wall and Mark Methe moved down from Chicago intending to open a record shop in a college town. They nearly settled on Morgantown, West Virginia, then passed through Athens on a friend's recommendation and stayed. Wuxtry opened in 1976 at the corner of College Avenue and Clayton Street and is the oldest continuously operating record store in Georgia. Methe opened the Decatur shop outside Atlanta in 1978 and still runs it. Rolling Stone has named Wuxtry one of the 25 best record stores in the country, and its part in the Athens scene is hard to overstate.
