ZudRangMa is Maft Sai's shop on Sukhumvit Soi 51, and its importance is easier to state than most: it is a serious part of why molam and luk thung are taken seriously again, at home as well as abroad. Music that had been written off as country music was dug out, reissued and played out until it was obvious, and the shop worked as the archive for the whole effort - Golden-era Thai pop, 45s, reissues and rarities, alongside African, Latin and current records chosen by the same ear. With Chris Menist he built the Paradise Bangkok label out of it and then the Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, which took the music out of the crates and onto stages abroad. Studio Lam, the bar he ran a few doors down, has since closed; the shop has not.
