Grant McDonagh worked at Quintessence Records, and when that shop and label wound up in 1981 he carried on in the same spirit as Zulu, on West 4th in Kitsilano. For over forty years it has done the things a scene needs a shop to do: run its own indie label, employ local musicians, promote shows big and small, and host gigs in the shop itself.
